comment Where are notifications coming from in OSX?
Some software installs Growl without telling you, so you may have it even though you didn't install it. It's worth checking that it's definitely not there.

comment Can I use a USB drive of Ubuntu created on Mac with a PC?
If you've downloaded an image from the Ubuntu web site and copied it direct to the key drive, following the instructions to make a bootable key drive, then yes, it will work.

comment Restart computer over the Internet via command line
Given that telnet is one of the frequently-scanned ports, you should consider forwarding a different, high number port such as 6901 to port 23 on your network. When you telnet in, you just need to specify the port and you're away, but it will make things much harder for Internet Bad Guys.

comment Will my device lose connection when switching to a different channel on the same SSID?
It depends... but it shouldn't. As long as you only have one DHCP server, the device should know that it's reconnecting to the same network.

comment X Session from Mac
You can use shell scripts on a Mac instead. In fact, being as Mac OS X is UNIX, you'll probably be able to use scripts from the UNIX computer you're logging in to on the Mac.
