I'm a full time database programmer and occasional all-around coder. Started with dBase II in DOS, used Clipper, Paradox, Access 1.0 through 2007, and now .NET VB / SQL Server / Windows Forms / Developer Express Components. Yeah, I'm pretty old.

comment Why do applications “need to close” or “stop working”, and what can I do about it?
Mtone says "I repeat, when an application is designed for .NET 3.5, it cannot be expected to run reliably on any other .NET version." But Microsoft says (at bit.ly/IPYsQK) "Source code written for one version of the .NET Framework should compile on later versions of the .NET Framework, and binaries that run on one version of the .NET Framework should behave identically on later versions of the .NET Framework." Yes, I see it says "should", but still "cannot be expected to run reliably" seems like, at the least, an overstatement.

comment .Net Framework issues on Windows 7 (probably after a gone-wrong SP1 update?) - Event Viewer won't work, nor Zune
You might try the .NET Framework cleanup tool - blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/08/28/8904493.aspx - to be sure that's not the issue. If that doesn't help, then I don't think the problems have anything to do with .NET Framework.

If you have .NET Framework 4 installed, then the .NET Framework is not the problem. Microsoft states at bit.ly/IPYsQK that "The .NET Framework 4 is backward-compatible with applications that were built with the .NET Framework versions 1.1, 2.0, 3.0, and 3.5. In other words, applications and components built with previous versions of the .NET Framework will work on the .NET Framework 4." If you agree, I would appreciate your accepting my answer!

comment Is it possible to have a wireless in-house NAS with wireless data transfer rates of equivalent to SATA speeds?
The highest data rate mentioned in Blu-ray specs is 72 Mbps. If a wireless N network can stream at even a third of it's rated speed, that's more than twice the required rate for any movie. In the real world, 25 Mbps is probably all you need for movie playback.

comment My first home network setup with a wireless router and switch
The ports on the WRT54GS router are limited to 10/100, so connecting the router to one of the 10/100/1000 ports on the switch is no benefit over a 10/100 port. The four gigabit (10/100/1000) ports on the switch should be used for devices that might communicate with each other directly - i.e. the Windows Home Server, the PS3, the gaming PC, and the Roku if it streams from the server. The TV and Blu Ray only talk to the internet so the higher speed is not useful.

Are your "pages" named "Sheet1", "Sheet2"? I have edited my answer to cover the possibility that you are using names other than the default.

comment Is software from NCH Software safe?
I've used WavePad sound editor for quite a while. Aside from some slightly aggressive marketing strategies in trying to sell you other programs, it's just fine. When you choose free software, it's only reasonable to expect to be solicited for paid upgrades - that's how it works.

comment Do I need a new video cable when upgrading my laptop screen to a higher resolution?
I've done business with laptopscreen.com and they know what they're doing. Whatever they tell you to do, that's what I would do!

comment How do I connect to a MySQL database from another computer in VB.NET?
This question has been edited twice but no one has questioned the confusion over "MySQL" in the title and SQL Server in the body. Is it possible that the poster meant "my SQL" - i.e. "the SQL server that is mine" and not MySQL? The grammar in the original unedited question implies English as a second language.

comment when creating a pivot chart in MS Access, how to prevent it from updating with every change?
@soandos - This seems like a very specific and most likely correct answer. Why do you make it as a comment instead of an answer? Not a criticism - I'm genuinely curious.

comment How do I remove a table embedded in a Microsoft Word document?
Hmmm... If you would be comfortable letting me see the document, I would take a look at it and I'm sure I can figure out the problem. My email address is in my profile.

comment How to write null into csv from Excel for blank fields
Add a second line to the macro: ActiveWorkbook.SaveAs FileFormat:=xlCSV, CreateBackup:=False -- The macro will now search and replace with "NULL" and save the file, all in one step.

Your Python skills are commendable, but what does this have to do with the question that was asked?

comment Prompt to select excel spreadsheets in Access?
If the spreadsheets have the same file name and are in the same location, you don't need to refresh the links. If that's not the case, the best solution is to write VBA code that prompts the user to select the files.

I could write you a program that does this when you click - but you would have to find the mouse cursor and move it to the program icon to click. :-(
