How can I check the health of eMMC with linux?

It seems that smartctl can't handle it:

root@om:~# smartctl -a /dev/mmcblk0
smartctl 6.5 2016-01-24 r4214 [x86_64-linux-4.4.0-63-generic] (local build)
Copyright (C) 2002-16, Bruce Allen, Christian Franke, www.smartmontools.org

/dev/mmcblk0: Unable to detect device type
Please specify device type with the -d option.

Use smartctl -h to get a usage summary

I guess no type matches eMMC. I see these types with smartctl -h:

 -d TYPE, --device=TYPE
Specify device type to one of: ata, scsi, sat[,auto][,N][+TYPE],
 usbcypress[,X], usbjmicron[,p][,x][,N], usbsunplus, marvell, areca,N/E,
 3ware,N, hpt,L/M/N, megaraid,N, aacraid,H,L,ID, cciss,N, auto, test

If you are curious, here is the logbook of my odyssey: https://github.com/guettli/linux-on-emmc/blob/master/README.rst

You probably want to use the "mmc" utility from mmc-utils (https://packages.debian.org/stretch/mmc-utils). I have, however, not yet seen a write and/or bad block counter.

# mmc extcsd read /dev/mmcblk1

That's a big block of text code. Can you explain how to use the mmc-utils and how this output is relevant to solving the case? Consider only include a sample of output instead of full output if it's just an example of the output, or a screenshot instead.

  • why is Native sector size [NATIVE_SECTOR_SIZE]: 0x00? In fact all the block sizes are 0

Above answer is right that mmc-utils is the way to go. The version in git (https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/cjb/mmc-utils.git/) reports DEVICE_LIFE_TIME_EST_TYP_{A,B}, where 1 is 0-10% reserved blocks used, 2 is 10-20%, etc. I presume the flash storage in question has to support this field before it can be reported.

The emmcparam utility from micron gives you a view on erase block counts: emmcparm

You can use it with -E to get a summary:

# emmcparm -E /dev/mmcblk0
Device file = /dev/mmcblk0
EXT_CSD revision [192] = 1.8 (for MMC v5.1)

Feature name: Erase Count Min | Max | Ave
Global erase count: 0 | 12 | 10
Enhanced area (SLC): 0 | 1 | 0
Normal area (MLC): 1 | 12 | 11

Or you can use it with -e to get a per-block print out of erase counts:

# emmcparm -e /dev/mmcblk0
Device file = /dev/mmcblk0
EXT_CSD revision [192] = 1.8 (for MMC v5.1)

Feature name: Block Erase Count
Block# Erase# Type
7 30 -
8 38 -
10 16 -
11 31 -
12 28 -
13 30 -
14 25 -
15 42 -
16 1 -
17 1 -
18 0 -
19 0 -
20 0 -
21 0 -
22 0 -
...

This utility is likely tied to micron storage devices unfortunately.
