http://wiki.lunarsoft.net/wiki/Product_IDs is an source to determinate the version. The Retrieving your product ID or MPC section tells you how to find the ID on CDs, ISOs or running machines.
The information you need is to find that out is the Channel ID, which is part of the Product ID.
I found this link Windows 7 Channel ID portion od Product ID. It has a reference to the lunarsoft list mentioned by JohannesM, but mentioned that it contained outdated data. I'm not sure if this has been updated, as the post is a couple years old.
