This is a new server with ubuntu 14.04. I can ssh locally (via 192.168..). But when I ssh remotely it cannot be connected after I input the password.

There is a firewall on the server, but the 22 port is already enabled.

It's sure the password is correct but always permission denied. please help.

    what do you have in /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny files on the server?

  • @JasonHeylon did you try to uncomment the "Listen 0.0.0.0" line and restart after that? Can you show ssh -vvv from remote?

  • Thank you all, there is a mistake made by the host administrator. He mixed up the local ip. There is all right after modify the local ip. Oct 31, 2014 at 2:24

Could you provide this result in your server that you tried to log in :

tail -f /var/log/auth.log | grep ssh

You could find the reason.

    you may want to suggest that Jason try the remote SSH connection while your command is running, and to end your command with Ctrl-C once he has the information we need. Unless you meant grep ssh /var/log/auth.log | tail? Oct 30, 2014 at 15:33

It's possible the user account is locked if it's not allowing you to login.

Check the shadow file for your username:

sudo cat /etc/shadow | grep user

If it has a ! infront of the password then logins are disabled.

man usermod

-L, --lock Lock a user's password. This puts a '!' in front of the encrypted password, effectively disabling the password. You can't use this option with -p or -U.

If it is locked, you can use usermod to unlock it:

usermod -U user

It might be worth creating a new user and testing to see if the new account can login? It'd be interesting to see the output on the server from:

cat /var/log/auth.log
0

I compare your sshd_config file with mine. This line is not present :

HostKey /etc/ssh/ssh_host_ed25519_key

Yuo could comment it with # and restart the ssh demon :

sudo service ssh restart
