I have a multiboot system with two hard disks:

  • Windows and some old Ubuntu versions on /dev/sda
  • Ubuntu 16.04 on /dev/sdb1

Then I installed Ubuntu 18.04 on the empty partition /dev/sdb2. I didn't remember where the old boot loader was located, so I chose /dev/sdb for the new bootloader.

Now I can boot Ubuntu 18.04 without problems but when I boot Ubuntu 16.04, I get this:

[ 1.820371] [drm:intel_set_pch_fifo_underrun_reporting [i915]] *ERROR* uncleared pch fifo underrun on pch transcoder A
[ 1.820395] [drm:intel_pch_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915]] *ERROR* PCH transcoder A FIFO underrun
[ 2.023723] usb 2-1.6: string descriptor 0 read error: -22
ssd1: clean, ... files, ... blocks
[ 5.074685] usb 2-1.6: string descriptor 0 read error: -22
Welcome to emergency mode! After logging in, ...

I already have tried logging in into rescue mode and running sudo fsck -f /dev/sdb1, but without success.

How can I repair this?

Since I'm trying to load the same OS on the same hardware as before, I think my problem is about the new GRUB version or configuration.

  • If you can, don’t use DisplayPort. IIRC this is a long-standing bug that hasn’t been resolved. It only happens when using DisplayPort.

  • I don't have DisplayPort. I only have HDMI connected. Unplugging my second screen doesn't help.

  • Hm, it’s probably a different issue then, sorry. It’s caused by the Intel graphics driver. In my case, it caused the display data stream to cease in a way that made even the display crash. Are you planning to use GPU-intensive applications on Linux?

  • No. Can I unload the Intel graphics driver?

  • I think the title is misleading: I don't see a relation between the graphic card warning and the aborted boot

Guess: Ubuntu 18.04 has kernel drivers that set up the hardware in certain ways which the kernel drivers in Ubunutu 16.04 don't understand, or don't take into account during initialition. So if you warm-boot Ubuntu 16.04 after booting Ubuntu 18.04, same basic hardware doesn't act as expected, leading to those errors.

Diagnose: Cold boot Ubuntu 16.04 (shut the computer off, cut power for a few seconds), and see if the problem still happens.

Workaround: Always cold boot Ubuntu 16.04.

  • Good hint! When I cold boot Ubuntu 16.04, it gets further than before. But it still ends with "Welcome to emergency mode". Can I manually remove some kernel drivers in GRUB?

The problem was that /dev/sdb2 was formatted during the installation of Ubuntu 18.04. So its UUID has changed and /etc/fstab wasn't correct anymore.

I had to boot Ubuntu 18.04, to mount /dev/sdb2 and to update its UUID in /etc/fstab (of the mounted partition).

The UUID can be retrieved via sudo blkid.
