I would like to remove pt-br audio and convert english DTS to AC3 and I'm using this command:

ffmpeg -i input.mkv -c:v copy -c:s copy -c:a ac3 -ac 2 -map 0:0 -map 0:2 -map 0:3 -aspect 16:9 test.mkv

Then running ffmpeg -i test.mkv (this is the output file from the above command) shows the following info about the aspect ratio:

Stream #0:0(eng): Video: h264 (High), yuv420p, 1920x1080, SAR 1:2 DAR 8:9, 23.98 fps, 23.98 tbr, 1k tbn, 47.95 tbc (default)

Look at the SAR/DAR value on stream 0:0. It's different from original file. I tried with and without -aspect parameter. I tried using -vf "DAR=16:9" but I get the message:

Filtergraph 'dar=16:9' was defined for video output stream 0:0 but codec copy was selected. Filtering and streamcopy cannot be used together."

How do I keep the aspect ratio without reencode the video?

To fix aspect ratio that gets broken after reencoding, try these steps:

  1. use parameter -aspect to force aspect ratio without reencoding:

    ffmpeg -i input.mkv -c copy -aspect 16/9 output.mkv

Alternatively you can use the MKVmerge to do the same:

    mkvmerge --aspect-ratio 16:9 -o output.mkv input.mkv

  2. If soft aspect ratio does not help, you can force it in the reencoding by setting scale and setdar (set display aspect ratio) video filters:

    ffmpeg -i input.mkv -c copy c:v your_codec -vf "scale=1920:1080,setdar=16/9" output.mkv

  3. If even the scale filter does not help, you can reset the video by creating AVS script and then reencoding the file from the script. This way you will keep only the raw video bitstream without any metadata that may consufe the players to use incorrect aspect ratio.

    ffmpeg -i input.avs -c copy c:v your_codec output.mkv

You need a program that will index the original video and then create the AVS file (e.g. on Windows you can use MeGUI and its Tools - File Indexer). You also need correct AviSynth and FFMPEG versions (32/64-bit) to work together.

Here is example of an AVS file:

    LoadPlugin("/path/to/avisynth/ffms2.dll")
    FFVideoSource("/path/to/input.mkv", fpsnum=24000, fpsden=1001, threads=1, colorspace="YUV420P8")
    LanczosResize(1920,1080)

0
-map 0:0 -map 0:1 -map 0:2
ffmpeg -i input.mkv -c:v copy -c:s copy -c:a ac3 -ac 2 -map 0:0 -map 0:1 -map 0:2 -aspect 16:9 test.mkv

if it doesn't work, avoid using "copy" edit a conversion.

I came across this issue while trying to use yt-dlp (with ffmpeg as a post-processor). Some of the videos seemed to have the wrong SAR to start with (in most cases it should be 1:1, aka. square pixels), and when I converted the videos to h.264 it displayed incorrectly and inconsistently in different software. This seems to have corrected it:

yt-dlp -f 313+140 --merge-output-format mp4 --postprocessor-args "ffmpeg:-c:v libx264 -c:a copy -vf scale=iw:ih,setsar=sar=1,setdar=dar=w/h" "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1234567"

In the above I'm using FFmpeg's video filter (-vf), setting the scale to the current input width and height (scale=iw:ih), setting the sample/pixel aspect ratio (sar) to 1, and setting the display aspect ratio (dar) to the same with and height (setdar=dar=w/h). If I didn't define all 3 values it would only display correctly in some software.
