I've tried downloading it several times from several different computers and networks. When I attempt to download it the download gets stuck mid way though. Where can I find a reliable offline installer?

    This has happened to me lots of times over the years when downloading. The whole experience of downloading it via the installer sucks. Whether its the installer or the servers or both ... I don't know nor care - I just want an easy package to download it all in one chunk.

    Not doing this in order to revoke the downvote, but you're right, my rant was inappropriate, revised. :)

  • Cygwin is a good UNIX-like dev environment for Windows, but really rubbish for installation and setup on Windows. They should really improve the infrastructure.

I have a modified apt-cyg that runs the installer from the local archive.
It really should be submitted as a patch, but never had the time to clean it up, so here goes.

Features

  • Offline install
  • Set mirror
  • Cache package so later installs can be faster
  • Force re-instalation even when package is installed
  • Supports setup.ini / setup.bz2 /
  • Use downloader of your choice to obtain the packages (we use rsync as default)
  • Scans cache for leftover, uses packages from failed installs of setup.exe as much as possible. (just make sure that you specify the cache folder when installing from setup.exe)

Download

http://pastebin.com/SSTZ4ATL
or see lower part of this answer

Usage:

Lets say you want your local repo at c:/archive/cygwin/ or /cygdrive/c/archive/cygwin/ if that matters.

Lets setup a repo, no matter what the download speed is. Adjust the mirror according to where you live, or is the fastest accessable.

cat > /cygdrive/c/archive/cygwin/sync-with-cygwin-mirror.sh <<"EOF"
#!/bin/bash
#
###
# Choose mirror that is on http://www.cygwin.com/mirrors.html
#
# "ftp://ftp.jaist.ac.jp/pub/cygwin/"
# "ftp://ftp.sunet.se/pub/lang/cygwin/"
# "http://mirrors.kernel.org/sourceware/cygwin/"
#
# Old
# "http://sources.redhat.com/cygwin/mirrors.lst"
###
rsync --partial -va rsync://ftp.jaist.ac.jp/pub/cygwin/release/ /cygdrive/c/archive/cygwin/release/
#
#/cygdrive/c/archive/cygwin
EOF

Then run the following

chmod +x /cygdrive/c/archive/cygwin/sync-with-cygwin-mirror.sh

From now on, a simple /cygdrive/c/archive/cygwin/sync-with-cygwin-mirror.sh
will update your local repo to the latest and greatest.

Next, setup the enviroment vars, so setup.exe will not get confused.

cat > /etc/setup/last-cache <<"EOF"
C:\archive\cygwin
EOF

Setup the default mirror, to whatever is fastest for you

cat > /etc/setup/last-mirror <<"EOF"
ftp://ftp.iij.ad.jp/pub/cygwin
EOF

then try it out!

apt-cyg find <pacakge name>
apt-cyg install <package name>

Example output of typical install session (I used --force here as this package was aready installed. You do not need it. Just for showing how to use, here)

$ apt-cyg install man --force
Working directory is /cygdrive/c/archive/cygwin
Mirror is ftp://ftp.iij.ad.jp/pub/cygwin
We are using the cache as package source.

Notice that because we aready had a local copy, it did not connect to the network, and instead, used the known copy that we had. Even if we do not know if we have the package, as long as the package is located somewhere in the sub directory of cache, apt-cyg will find it, and use md5sum hash to validate if the package is broken or not.

I usually use the "download to local directory" option in the standard installer, and select the packages I want in a base installation. That downloads the packages I want but doesn't install, and I can copy that package directory to a network share or thumbdrive. Add a copy of the Cygwin setup.exe to that local directory, and you've got yourself an offline installer.

The disadvantage to this method is that your offline packages aren't kept up to date. But you can always re-run the setup to download and install updated packages.

Try creating a standalone Cygwin installer using pmycg.

I was having some trouble with apt-cyg setup.ini

I had to change the getsetup method in apt-cyg in order to get everything working.

function getsetup()
{
  if test "$noscripts" == "0" -a "$noupdate" == "0"
  then
    touch setup.ini
    mv setup.ini setup.ini-save
    wget -N $mirror/setup.bz2
    if test -e setup.bz2 && test $? -eq 0
    then
      bunzip2 setup.bz2
      mv setup setup.ini
      echo Updated setup.ini
    else
      if [ `arch` == "x86_64" ]
      then
        echo using x86_64
        arch=x86_64
      else
        echo using x86
        arch=x86
      fi
      wget -N $mirror/$arch/setup.ini
      if test -e setup.ini && test $? -eq 0
      then
        echo Updated setup.ini
      else
        mv setup.ini-save setup.ini
        echo Error updating setup.ini, reverting
      fi

}
