I want to establish a SSH connection between two Linux machines: client & server. I am using root account on both machines, and their linux distro is CentOS 7.

I generated a pair of private-public keys for SSH using following command ssh-keygen -t rsa. It generated key files id_rsa & id_rsa.pub. I appended the content of id_rsa.pub to /root/.ssh/authorized_keys on server-side, & I uploaded id_rsa to /root/.ssh/id_rsa on client-side.

ssh connection fails with Permission denied (publickey). Here is the full verbose output:

Permission denied (publickey).

I think the important line is this one: debug1: key_parse_private2: missing begin marker. I went to look on the net and I found someone saying server-side logs were more significant. So I went to check /var/log/secure on server-side. Here is what I found:

I found this command to get more insight into the meaning of this error:

$ openssl errstr 0407006A
error:0407006A:rsa routines:RSA_padding_check_PKCS1_type_1:block type is not 01

Now that is where it starts getting funny. Using that same SSH private key, I am able to successfully connect to the server using a second client machine. This machine is a Windows machine, and I connect with mobaxterm by specifying the path to the private key.

Back with the original client machine, I decided to reupload the same private key somewhere else in the filesystem (in directory /root/18-4-2016). And then... surprise... connection was working.

$ ssh -i ~/18-4-2016/id_rsa root@<server-ip> worked while

$ ssh -i ~/.ssh/id_rsa root@<server-ip> was still failing with the same error.

I tried to find differences between both files, without any success:

$ diff ~/.ssh/id_rsa ~/18-4-2016/id_rsa

I answer my own question

The source of the problem was an old /root/.ssh/id_rsa.pub file on the client side. I removed this file and it worked fine.

In my custom key folder (/root/18-4-2016/), there wasn't any id_rsa.pub along the copy of id_rsa, explaining why it was working when using that specific key file.

I also tested by copying the correct public key from the server-side to /root/.ssh/id_rsa.pub on the client-side, instead of simply removing the public key file. It also worked fine.

It's very strange that ssh client makes use of a public key.
