I am trying to create a Windows 7 USB boot drive out of a USB stick. It is 1TB and comes up as General UDisk USB Device in my device manager. I am using Rufus 2.10.973. Once I press start, the format begins. It sits on "Clearing MBR/PBR/GPT structures…" for a while before displaying an alert:

Error: Error while partitioning drive.

What to do?

I am using the following settings in Rufus:

Rufus window with settings

MBR partition scheme for BIOS or UEFI-CSM

Cluster size
4096 bytes (Default)

Format Options

Can you try with Rufus 2.9 (which you can download here)?

I know there can be an issue affecting Windows XP users during the clearing of the boot records. Your screenshot seems to indicate that you are not running Rufus on XP, and also your error code is different, but it might be worth finding out if you problem is linked to the changes that were applied in Rufus 2.10.

  • The new version solved the problem, thank you. However I have yet to actually finish formatting the device so whether or not it crashes later on I don't know. The read speed being 13.88 MB/Sec and with a write speed of 4.96 MB/Sec I've decided it's not worth it. Probably going to just bin it.

I realize this is old but on the off chance you still have it or anyone else stumbles upon this looking for the ID or error:

The ID 048D:1234 indicates a Chipsbank controller if I'm not mistaken -- these are often used for making fake USB sticks -- and yours claims to be an unlikely 1TB. Test this with e.g. RMPartUSB to see if it is a real drive first.
