I am trying to combine two videos:

  • A base video
  • A shorter video overlayed on top, starting 2 seconds into the base video

When I do this, the audio from the overlayed video starts immediately with the start of the base video, rather than when the overlayed video is being displayed.

I have tried dozens of permutations of setpts, asetpts, adelay, etc., and can't get the audio for the overlayed video to play when the overlayed video is displayed. I have tried to find related questions on this site, but haven't found one that answers this.

Here is:

Here is my full command line and output, where I am attempting to put the overlay video in the center of the base video, starting two seconds into the video.

ffmpeg -y -i base.mp4 -i overlay.mp4 -c:v libx264 -c:a libfdk_aac -filter_complex " [0:v] setpts=PTS-STARTPTS [b1] ; [1:v] setpts=PTS-STARTPTS+2/TB [b2] ; [b1] [b2] overlay=x=320:y=120:eof_action=pass [outv] ; [1:a] adelay=2|2 [outa] " -map "[outv"] -map "[outa]" combined.mp4

adelay values must be set in milliseconds. Use 2000 instead of 2 and everything will be as expected:

ffmpeg -y -i base.mp4 -i overlay.mp4 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -filter_complex " [0:v] setpts=PTS-STARTPTS [b1] ; [1:v] setpts=PTS-STARTPTS+2/TB [b2] ; [b1] [b2] overlay=x=320:y=120:eof_action=pass [outv] ; [1:a] adelay=2000|2000 [outa] " -map "[outv"] -map "[outa]" combined.mp4

  • Sigh.... of course.
