Last night I entered my credentials to log into my Amazon account (using Firefox v.50.1.0) and got the error shown below.
An error occurred during a connection to www.amazon.com:80. SSL received a record that exceeded the maximum permissible length. Error code: SSL_ERROR_RX_RECORD_TOO_LONG
After seeing above error I entered amazon.com into the address field of a new tab, and it seemed like I was already logged in. Being that it was late Friday night I thought perhaps Amazon was making some changes on their site and this was just a temporary problem that would disappear on its own.
But this morning I am getting the same error when I log in to Amazon. And still the same behavior, in that if I just ignore it and navigate to amazon.com afterwards, it looks like I am already logged in.
However I have only seen it on one computer in the household.
So the question I wanted to ask is if this error can be caused by some configuration on my local machine?
[UPDATE:] Thank you all for your explanations. The error does seem to result from having the port 80 specified in the address, although I did not enter it on my own.
After attempting to replicate this multiple times, it seems that this happens at the end of the following sequence of steps:
- Navigate to amazon.com (the browser should be directed to https:www.amazon.com)
[Note that I have only been able to replicate this with a particular version of an Amazon home page as described further down below]
Click on Accounts & Lists > Sign In. Amazon will redirect your browser to this URL (this URL contains additional redirection that will be completed once you enter the credentials and click Sign In).
Enter credentials and click Sign In.
Amazon redirects to the URL specifying the insecure port 80, resulting in the error message.
During my attempts to replicate this I noticed that Amazon currently serves at least two different home pages. The more frequent home page has these menu options in the upper right corner:
The second (less frequent) home page version has more options in the upper right corner and looks like this:
The login option in this latter version redirects to the URL in step 2 above. That URL is what sets the address to amazon.com:80, leading to the error message.
