I'm trying to install the Set-SmbBandwidthLimit commandlet for use in throttling my backups over smb. I've looked at the official docs and it says

Before you can use this cmdlet, you must enable the feature by using the following command: Add-WindowsFeature -Name FS-SMBBW For more information, type Get-Help Install-WindowsFeature

Which RSAT to even get the command - and that command dosen't actually work on a client windows build. I get the error

PS C:\WINDOWS\system32> get-WindowsFeature -Name FS-SMBBW
get-WindowsFeature : The target of the specified cmdlet cannot be a Windows client-based operating system.
At line:1 char:1
Install-WindowsFeature : The target of the specified cmdlet cannot be a Windows client-based operating system.

    + FullyQualifiedErrorId : WindowsClient_NotSupported,Microsoft.Windows.ServerManager.Commands.AddWindowsFeatureCom

How do I actually install this feature - its listed as being available for windows 10

As per ramhound's comments - it fails when I just run it. In different ways, indicating I need to install it

  • Have you tried using Set-SmbBandwidthLimit without enabling the feature in question? My research indicates it’s a Windows Server role and cannot be ran on a Windows client. I know what the support article says, I suspect it’s a dual article, for both Server 2016 and Windows 10 and enabling the feature is only applicable to Server 2016 – Ramhound Dec 21 '17 at 2:53
  • I would not be surprised if this simply means the cmdlet (which can target a remote machine via -CimSession) is available on Windows 10 but can only target Server. – Bob Dec 21 '17 at 3:31
  • It is likely miscategorized as available for Win10. All roads appear to lead to this being a server cmdlet only. – root Dec 21 '17 at 13:39
