I would like to watch videos from my camera on a computer with Ubuntu Linux via DLNA. I have installed VLC Media Player and MiniDLNA.

However, I cannot see any videos in VLC Media Player. I have no experience with DLNA. It is possible that I am doing some stupid mistake or that I have misunderstood some basic concepts.

I suppose that there should be three "parties" involved: camera, DLNA server and media player. The camera uploads a video file to the DLNA server and the media player connects to the DLNA server and plays a streamed video. Let's leave the camera aside because I think that something is wrong with VLC and MiniDLNA cooperation.

  • Version of Ubuntu Linux: 16_04
  • MiniDLNA version: 1.1.5+dfsg-2
  • Version of VLC Media Player: 2.2.2

I have installed the package minidlna. I have edited the configuration file /etc/minidlna.conf. Now, it has the following content:

user=minidlna
media_dir=/var/lib/minidlna
db_dir=/var/cache/minidlna
log_dir=/var/log
log_level=general,artwork,database,inotify,scanner,metadata,http,ssdp,tivo=debug
root_container=.
port=8200
serial=681019810597110
model_name=Windows Media Connect compatible (MiniDLNA)
inotify=yes
album_art_names=Cover.jpg/cover.jpg/AlbumArtSmall.jpg/albumartsmall.jpg
album_art_names=AlbumArt.jpg/albumart.jpg/Album.jpg/album.jpg
album_art_names=Folder.jpg/folder.jpg/Thumb.jpg/thumb.jpg
strict_dlna=no
enable_tivo=no
notify_interval=895
minissdpdsocket=/run/minissdpd.sock
max_connections=50

I have copied a video file (mp4) to /var/lib/minidlna and restarted MiniDLNA

sudo service minidlna restart
sudo service minidlna force-reload

If I open the URL http://localhost:8200/ in a web browser, a page is displayed that says: 0 audio files, 1 video file, 0 image files.

I open VLC Media Player. In the playlist, I select Local Network -> Universal Plug'n'Play. ...and nothing happens. I cannot see anything in the playlist. I expect the single video file to be displayed in the playlist.

The only interested line in MiniDLNA log is

inotify.c:198: warn: WARNING: Inotify max_user_watches [8192] is low or close to the number of used watches [2] and I do not have permission to increase this limit. Please do so manually by writing a higher value into /proc/sys/fs/inotify/max_user_watches.

However, it does not seem related to the problem at first glance.

What am I doing wrong? Thanks.
