According to https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Google_Chromecast one needs to add the following iptables rules to enable Chromecast to connect to a dd-wrt network:

iptables -I FORWARD --destination -j REJECT
iptables -I FORWARD --destination -j REJECT

I can confirm these rules actually work (I couldn't connect without them) and that the ip addresses correspond to Google's DNS servers. I have two questions:

  1. What do these rules do? Do they prevent Chromecast from contacting Google's DNS servers? If not, what do they do?
  2. Any idea why these rules might be necessary for Chromecast to connect to the Wifi network? What could be wrong without them?
