I am trying to host an SSL Apache2 web server on Ubuntu 16.04 on the domain mturk.bitasy.me but I have reason to believe the server is lying to me, somewhere at least. I have created two files in the sites-enable directory, one for HTTP and one for HTTPS. They are posted below. For some reason the http one works fine (if you go to the site you can see it works) but the https does not load, no matter what I do. I even went so far as to move the http config file and only have SSL set up on the web server, but even in this case the HTTP (somehow) works and the SSL (somehow) still isn't being hosted. This is the case even though I removed the Listen 80 line completely from ports.conf and replaced it with Listen 443. I am making sure to restart the server every time (sudo service apache2 restart) and when I run (apache2 -S) the result is as follows. It literally shows me that it is not listening to port 80, yet that's the only port with the site showing up! I'll also put the error log below, not that anything useful is in it. My intuition says that somehow the server is not updating when I restart it, but the -S print just makes that seem impossible. It's not that there are somehow two servers running, because when I stop it the HTTP site does actually become unavailable.

$:apache2 -S

                # SSL Protocol Adjustments:
                # The safe and default but still SSL/TLS standard compliant shutdown
                # approach is that mod_ssl sends the close notify alert but doesn't wait for
                # the close notify alert from client. When you need a different shutdown
                # approach you can use one of the following variables:
                # o ssl-unclean-shutdown:
                # This forces an unclean shutdown when the connection is closed, i.e. no
                # SSL close notify alert is send or allowed to received. This violates
                # the SSL/TLS standard but is needed for some brain-dead browsers. Use
                # this when you receive I/O errors because of the standard approach where
                # mod_ssl sends the close notify alert.
                # o ssl-accurate-shutdown:
                # This forces an accurate shutdown when the connection is closed, i.e. a
                # SSL close notify alert is send and mod_ssl waits for the close notify
                # alert of the client. This is 100% SSL/TLS standard compliant, but in
                # practice often causes hanging connections with brain-dead browsers. Use
                # this only for browsers where you know that their SSL implementation
                # works correctly.
                # Notice: Most problems of broken clients are also related to the HTTP
                # keep-alive facility, so you usually additionally want to disable
                # keep-alive for those clients, too. Use variable "nokeepalive" for this.
                # Similarly, one has to force some clients to use HTTP/1.0 to workaround
                # their broken HTTP/1.1 implementation. Use variables "downgrade-1.0" and
                # "force-response-1.0" for this.

As is generally the case with debugging, I realized the problem after hours of no success, immediately after I ask for help.

I am using an Amazon Lightsail server, whose firewall is configured by default to accept only connections on ports 20 and 80 for SSH and HTTP. I needed to manually allow SSL connections on port 443.
