I'm unable to create a scheduled TFS backup. When I try, the admin app goes busy for a minute then. unfreezes, without saying what happened or went wrong.

I was just given permissions to login to the TFS server and be a TFS admin. In the TFS Admin Console I can see I don't have database read permissions as the Application Tier status shows several [SQL Access Denied] texts throughout. Some web searches later I still don't know what SQL (and other?) permissions I need to run backups.

The TFS_Scheduled Backups_9999_999999 files also show one concerning warning (and a load of Info level messages saying nothing) which reads "Reading JAVA_HOME failed". Is Java required for TFS administration!?
