I have a linux host and windows 10 guest. The shared folder has a symbolic link to a file outside the shared folder. The symbolic link shows up in windows but I can't access the contents of the file.

PS Z:\wpt\html\rendering\the-details-element> cat details-display-property-is-ignored-ref.html

cat : Access is denied
At line:1 char:1
+ cat details-display-property-is-ignored-ref.html
+ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
+ CategoryInfo : PermissionDenied: (Z:\wpt\html\ren...gnored- ref.html:String) [Get-Content], UnauthorizedAccessException
+ FullyQualifiedErrorId : ItemExistsUnauthorizedAccessError,Microsoft.PowerShell.Commands.GetContentCommand

Is it possible to use a symbolic link on the host like this and access the file in the guest? If so, what do I need to do to make it happen?
