This topic has been driving me nuts for a while now, and I'd like to be able to figure out what's going wrong. I use zsh
with screen
in my terminal, and have been for a while. However, for whatever reason, it appears that on login, my installation of RVM
doesn't get loaded by default. Ruby is correctly set to the version installed by RVM (1.9.3), but the rest of the environment doesn't get loaded:
~/Desktop => ruby -v
ruby 1.9.3p0 (2011-10-30 revision 33570) [x86_64-darwin11.2.0]
~/Desktop => rails -v
Rails is not currently installed on this system. To get the latest version, simply type:
$ sudo gem install rails
You can then rerun your "rails" command.
~/Desktop => rvm reload
RVM reloaded!
~/Desktop => rails -v
Rails 3.2.1
I have no idea what's going wrong, and by all accounts, it doesn't seem like anything should be going wrong. My screenrc
file correctly uses the login shell with shell -$SHELL
, but it doesn't seem to have any effect (unfortunately, this is the only thing that appears to have fixed other people's installations of RVM within screen
, and it's what the docs suggest making sure you have set, but it doesn't seem to make a difference for me).
I'm running on Mac OS X 10.7.3, and my login shell is set to /bin/zsh
. I don't use oh-my-zsh
. My zshrc
file is as follows (sorry about the length - I'm sure not all of it is relevant, but I don't want to leave any potentially useful information out):

In addition, my screenrc
file is as follows:
# Use login shell.
shell -$SHELL
# Don't display the copyright page.

# Escapes the 'z' character, instead of 'c'.

hardstatus alwayslastline "%{= ..} %-w%{=b ..} %n* %t %{-}%+w %=%{= ..}"
Weirdest of all, however, is that when I change my RVM sourcing line to [[ -s ~/.rvm/scripts/rvm ]] && source ~/.rvm/scripts/rvm && rvm reload
, I see the message RVM reloaded!
, but the environment still isn't set up. rails
isn't recognized until I reload RVM again.
Any help with this would be much appreciated. Thanks!
zsh
- version4.3.11
. I can try to install4.3.12
via Homebrew if it would help.4.3.12
made no difference.
