I've been trying to install GCC on Fedora 18. Here is a direct excerpt from my terminal window:

ishan@localhost ~]$ sudo yum install gcc gcc-c++

I don't know why this is happening. When I had yum-ed development tools, everything had installed properly, other than the compiler.

Is there a way to get rid of this error and install GCC?

Try to update the package audit first.

yum update audit

    And if that does not work, perhaps remove the audit package and install again gcc .... Apr 19, 2013 at 15:50
  • How do I remove audit? is it dangerous to do so? (linux newbie here!)

  • @Ishan Have you tried updating it first? If that didn't work, you could try to uninstall it with yum remove audit, but chances are it might be a dependency and it won't let you. Try them both (in the order I said), and tell us what happens.

  • Done! updating audit did help!. @timss: I am happy you tried to help, but I finished it SECONDS before you posted!

  • Something fishy is going on here, if there is a newer audit package, the yum install should have picked it up as part of the transaction.
