I'm trying to add a VPN through the network setting on OSX. I have added the credentials through iOS on my iPhone, they check out and I'm then connected.

I'm connecting to a PPTP. Example:

  • Server address: vpn.example.com
  • Account name: user
  • Password: password

I keep getting this error prompt:

A connection could not be established to the PPP server. Try reconnecting. If the problem continues, verify your settings and contact your Administrator.

Any suggestions to why I would be able to connect through my phone but not my desktop?

  • Do your phone and the desktop connect through the same Internet connection? Same router? – slhck Aug 13 '13 at 19:15
  • I think I figured out why, my phone is connecting to a different network than my computer. Would this be a firewall problem with my wireless internet connection? – Daniel McGinn Aug 13 '13 at 19:22
  • It's possible (although not very likely IMO). You can only verify this if you can tether your Mac with the iPhone and try its (mobile?) connection, or try a different Internet connection altogether. – slhck Aug 13 '13 at 19:33
  • I was able to pair my phone to my computer and then log in to the vpn that way. This still doesn't explain why I can't connect through my router. – Daniel McGinn Aug 13 '13 at 19:51
  • Some ISPs don't allow VPN traffic, this is why many VPN services also serve/tunnel via port 443 (ssl). Have you tried connecting to an open VPN other than PPTP 1723 and GRE 47? – Daniël W. Crompton Aug 14 '13 at 0:14
