I have 5 hard drives in a machine sitting in a cupboard.

/dev/sda is a 500GB Seagate drive, and is the boot disk.
/dev/sd{b,c,d,e} are 2TB drives in a raid6 configuration.

smartctl is showing significantly higher temperatures (like ~140 degrees celsius) on the raid drives than the boot drive.

Do I need to be worried?

/dev/sdb and /dev/sde are new Western Digital Black drives (new=1 week)
/dev/sdc and /dev/sdd are 5 year old Hitachi drives

If those are real temperatures, then yes, you should be worried. The Western Digital Black drives list a maximum operating temperature of 60 degrees Celsius (PDF link). The Hitachi specification is probably similar.

However, it is extremely unlikely that the drives could reach that temperature and still run normally. It may be that the sensor is malfunctioning, or it may be reporting degrees in Fahrenheit. If so, you should consider active cooling, as the Hitachi drives are over 60 degrees.

    You can easily check that by touching the drive. If you burn your finger, those are real temperatures and you should be worried. (100 °C is boiling, 150 °C is a reasonable temperature for a baking oven.) Most likely, though, those are normalized values rather than raw Celsius temperatures. – Ilmari Karonen Jun 3 '14 at 2:07
  • I suppose it could be a normalized value, but this would be atypical for a temperature reading. The detailed drive specification would be good to have, if the OP can say what model the Hitachi drives are. – user55325 Jun 3 '14 at 2:26

  • @IlmariKaronen - I can happily touch the edges of the drives - seem pretty cool to me. I've got two fans creating a lot of air flow across the drives, one on either side of the array (added when I added the WD Black drives) – Steve Lorimer Jun 3 '14 at 2:53
  • You should be fine, then - based on this it looks like it's not actually reporting the raw value. Just to be sure, what is the output of smartctl -l scttempsts /dev/sdc? – user55325 Jun 3 '14 at 3:23
