My new laptop seems to be having USB issues. It keeps telling me that there was a "Power surge on hub port" and that a device has "exceeded the power limits of its hub port." Also weird is that in Device Manager, it says my USB root hub has 13 ports on it- my entire laptop only has 2 physical ports though... Any idea why this could be happening?

  • What OS and make/model of laptop? Was your C drive always listed in your list of devices that can be "Safely Removed", or is that new behavior? Jul 29, 2014 at 3:02
  • Dell Latitude E7440. I just got the laptop today, and it was always like that.

  • Is it truly a new laptop, or used? From whom did you purchase it?

  • It is a company laptop. It has probably had users before me.

  • My friend said that it sounded like the manufacturer had hooked the SSD up internally via USB 3.0 rather than SATA, which would explain both the performance decrease and the USB hub power surge since DevMan says the hub is only rated for 500 mA. What do you guys think? Would an OEM really be that stupid?
