I have just encountered a problem with Chrome on my laptop.

I am stumped on how to fix it. Everything, I thought would fix has had no effect. I have:

  • Disabled "Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed". When I close Chrome it is still using up resources.
  • Disabled all plugins and extensions. It still hogs up over half my laptop's CPU even when its closed.

On my PC, Chrome runs absolutely fine with a few processes. Even with five or so tabs open, only one image is in resource manager. When Chrome is closed, it closes the processes and the one image in Resource Manager. My cpu level goes right down.

On my laptop, regardless of if Chrome is open or not, it still uses up around 60% CPU. Even if I select End Task on the Chrome images they all come back up. I think chrome is hiding something that is still using the network. Ending the tasks is only temporarily curing the symptoms not the root cause of the problem.

Try using procexp from sysinternals and do a find > find handle on chrome.exe ... it may tell you what is keeping it running even though you close the application. – Sun Dec 10 '14 at 22:23
  • give me a xperf trace about the CPU usage: pastebin.com/pgE11HRD. – magicandre1981 Dec 11 '14 at 5:29
  • If it is still using resources it is not closed. – DavidPostill Dec 11 '14 at 11:03
