I just did the following with no problem:

brew install python3

pip3 install numpy

pip3 install scipy

But when trying:

pip3 install ipython

I get:

Why doesn't this work? How can I get around these errors?

You may not have write permission to the /usr/local/bin directory. To get around this, run

sudo pip3 install ipython

You'll need to enter your password, assuming that you have administrator privileges on your computer.

  • Do you have to manually set up an ipython3 command? – cbare Sep 11 '15 at 19:47
  • @cbare No, it's done automatically by pip – MattDMo Sep 12 '15 at 14:43
  • You should never use sudo with pip3. If you have to use sudo - something is not right. – Andrei Konstantinov Aug 26 '17 at 21:40

You use --user, unless you are installing as the super user (su) for some reason.

pip3 install --user ipython
