Usually, when I select text, the selected text remains black and Word shows me what is selected by highlighting it with a light blue background. However, for some text, when I select it, Word shows me what is selected by turning the black text white and turning the white background black.

Why does this sometimes happen? What is Word trying to tell me? How do I make it so that selected text is always shown with a light blue background?

I am using Word 2008 for the Mac (with Mac OS X 10.9) but I suspect that I'd be getting the same behavior with Word 2007 for Windows (and probably for more recent versions of Word also).
