The subject is correct ;-)

My problem is this: I have a set of MP4 files; all of them play with vlc on my Ubuntu box. But when copy them to USB; and want to play them from my TV ... some work; others do not. The TV set is a Grundig, 28 VLE 5500WG. There is no specific error message; just something like "unknown file format".

  • Given the info you provided I see no practical difference between these files. – llogan Mar 29 '15 at 17:14

I figured one way that works (not sure if it is optimal). Running

ffmpeg -i broken.mp4 -pix_fmt yuv420p -crf 18 good.mp4

Creates an MP4 that is a bit larger (probably minimally worse in terms of quality) ... and that works on my TV set.

(but I am still looking for other answers, if there are any)

  • Does it also work if you simply remux? ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c copy output.mp4. – llogan Mar 29 '15 at 17:14
  • I tried; and not, that doesn't work. I guess my TV set like whatever the "Stupid Ocelot" encoder is creating. – GhostCat Mar 29 '15 at 18:01

Use Super Encoder / Copy video/audio to mp4 Just tried on mp4 file with FOV tag in file name. Stupid Ocelot is the problem. Now plays on TV and Blu Ray Player// both Panasonic. Good Luck

  • Sorry, what is "super encode"? How exactly did you rework your file? – GhostCat Apr 6 '15 at 9:00
