I have a WD Elements 2TB portable hard disk (exFAT). I am unable to do backup of Windows on it. My Windows 7 laptop has NTFS system.

  • How are you trying to make the backup? With 3rd party software, manually, Windows Recovery... ? – nehcsivart Aug 31 '15 at 23:50
  • And also do describe the symptoms of "unable to do backup". – Angstrom Sep 1 '15 at 9:18
  • Hi tchen and Angstrom, I tried Windows 7 system recovery and macrium reflect free version 6. My Toshiba laptop's internal hard disk is 300 GB, of which only 25 GB is free, that's why I want to do backup on WD Elements 2TB portable external HDD. My laptop's HDD has NTFS file system and external HDD has exFAT system – Siddharth Sep 2 '15 at 20:19
  • About the symptom: first of all, it starts backup and goes on smoothly for 4 hours. But just before some 5-8% backup is left, it stops and some message was displayed like "4GB size..." I actually don't remember that but I know that my External HDD is completely empty – Siddharth Sep 2 '15 at 20:25
  • Also, after unsuccessful backup, the computer asks me the need to format the external drive before I can use it. Sometimes, it formats and sometimes not. Sometimes, it is not discovered and I hit my head on the wall. After spending an hour and formatting 10 times, it was finally discovered. – Siddharth Sep 2 '15 at 20:35
