Typically we can turn off an iMac's screen but pressing control+shift+eject but this would turn off the external screen as well (TV, projector, etc). We can also turn the brightness of the screen to none but the screen won't turn off completely. This is distracting during presentation and not helpful to extend the lifespan of the monitor. I wonder if there is an app that allows us to turn iMac's screen completely off like the Macbook Pro (by turning down the brightness all the way).

I had the same issue, But at minimum brightness, there is nothing visible at all. So, it works like it's turned off. (Mine is Macbook Pro Retina with OS X El Capitan 10.11.1)
