Double Data Rate type 3 (DDR3) is the current dominant type of RAM which surpassed the formerly most popular DDR2 RAM in the last couple of years. DDR3 RAM can transfer data twice as fast as DDR2 RAM. The two types of RAM module are not compatible with most motherboards accepting only one or the other.
