I'm old (70). Started w/ computers early -- wrote a payroll program, w/ withholdings and payroll tax calculations, when I was about 20, in BASIC, on slow, noisy terminal connected by acoustic modem, for my CPA father. It used that 1" yellow paper, punched tape for data storage. The punches made totally awesome confetti.
My father told me there was no need for programmers, because NASA was cutting staff and their programmers were seeking jobs. So, I learned to do something else, for my career. Not all the career advice my father gave me was very good.
Meanwhile, my first PC (after my Commodore 64) was built by me at a computer shop in a strip mall that advertised they'd help you build a PC. I've built (and rebuilt) all of my desktops since. Bought a laptop after I retired (employer took back the one I'd been using), but don't use it much.
Now I'm retired. I like RPG video games. Currently re-enjoying Witcher I.
